I visited a really good salon for my haircut a few years ago. I had quite a long hair. It was plain and boring so I decided to spruce it up with my visit to the salon.

As I was waiting in one of the finest salons in town for my haircut, I was called in for my appointment. The stylist was busy examining my hair; looking at the length and checking for split ends. The stylist then explained the haircut and asked my suggestions.

I told him my preference and we got ready- I wanted to maintain the length with a visible bounce to my hair! As he kept visually measuring my hair, he asked the most dreaded question I hate-

“What shampoo do you use?”

I panicked. I was wondering why I’m being asked this question? Might be my hair was dirty and lacked the signs of a healthy hair. Might be it was not smelling good.

Keeping my inner chaos hidden; I told him I use a medicated shampoo. The stylist kept quite and nodded his head with a tight smile. He didn’t ask me anything else about the shampoo.

Reason- stylists don’t bother to know the name of medicated shampoos in the market.

I was ashamed of my shampoo choice! I can’t possibly say I use a drug store shampoo that I casually buy during my grocery run. It would be humiliating. In fact, I have never used a medicated shampoo in my life!

After I came home, the answer hit me like a brick! What’s wrong with using a simple shampoo? Why was I ashamed of my choice? It is after all just a shampoo! I realized that the stylist was probably trying to sell me some high end costly shampoo.

Most of the times our choices are determined by our resources and what we make of it. My over the counter shampoo fit me fine! I didn’t have to buy a costly shampoo to manage my tresses. Using what works for me is the right thing to do!

Honestly, it is ok to do what works for you, and be proud of it.

And anybody who makes you feel small are not worth your energy and time. People will judge you no matter what you do- so you might as well do what works for you.

Be fearless in what you do. Don’t be afraid to be yourself because everybody else is already taken.

P.S: As for me, my medicated shampoo days are long gone! Now, I simply say the name of my shampoo just to see the look on my stylist face.
